Harmful Bacteria

For thousands of years, mankind has lived in fear of disease. Sometimes an unknown disease would appear suddenly, spread very rapidly and kill thousands of people. It was called an epidemic. No one knew what caused it or how to stop it. About 100 years ago, Louis Pasteur, a French scientist, discovered that some diseases were caused by tiny microscopic life forms that are not plants or animals. These tiny living things, called bacteria, would enter the body of an animal or plant and damage the cells. The science of bacteriology developed from this discovery. Since the days of Pasteur, scientists have discovered hundreds of different bacteria that cause different diseases. And they have found many ways to fight the harmful bacteria. Kingdom Protista

In the historic classification of life into kingdoms, similar organisms were grouped into Monera (life that lacked cell nuclei), Plants, Animals, Fungi, and Protista. The Protista grouping was an odd assortment; the only general rule was that they were one-celled organisms. Because technology did not exist to separate these small life forms more appropriately, they were lumped together. Since then, genetic studies have allowed this group to be better organized using common ancestry and monophyletic grouping. The former kingdom Protista has been divided into four kingdoms: Amoebozoa, Chromalveolata, Rhizaria, and Excavata. Some of the other organisms that had been in Protista were reclassified as plants.

All protists have eukaryotic cells, which means that they possess an organized nucleus, a complete set of internal membranes and typical cell organelles such as mitochondria. In addition, all the protists are single cells or colonial single cells, and live associated with water. Many of the members of this kingdom are still called protozoans or "first animals," and traditionally were studied with the more typical animals. The remaining protists are algae-like and were formerly considered to be plants. Some scientists have called these protophytans or "first plants." This poster measures 25.5" x 36"

The Five Kingdoms

The classification of biologic material has changed many times. We expect to see more changes in the future as new things are being discovered about DNA, RNA and species. As scientists find new life, they may need to reclassify organisms yet again. At present, life is divided into three domains: the Eukarya, Archaea, and Bacteria. This poster is about the traditional five-kingdom organization of life that was being used until recently. It is based upon simple questions which allow scientists to divide life into specific categories. Such questions are: what are the number of cells in the organism (single or many), the presence or absence of internal structures (chloroplasts - no chloroplasts; nucleus - no nucleus; cell wall and membrane - no cell wall) and the methods of energy processing. For instance, some organisms make chlorophyll which permits them to make food by using photosynthesis. Chlorophyll uses light and components of water and carbon dioxide to make sugar as a method of storing energy. A different major energy-related mechanism is called cellular respiration. In this process food reacts with oxygen to release stored energy with carbon dioxide as a waste product. The five kingdoms shown here are: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and Monera. The first four are all in the domain Eukarya. The last kingdom is the modern domains of bacteria and archaea. The more current version (developed in 2010) actually has 3 domains and six kingdoms. They are the domains of: eukaryota, archaea and bacteria. The kingdoms found in the domain eukaryota are called: amoeba, opisthokonta, rhizaria, archaeoplastida, chromalveolata and excavata. Echinoderms

The echinoderms include a number of animals you will easily recognize such as sea stars, sea urchins and sand dollars. There are a few that you would never guess as belonging in the same phylum like crinoids and sea cucumbers.

There are about 7000 species of echinoderms. All live in the ocean or in the bottom sediment. The echinoderms got their name because of their characteristic skin which is covered with spines. Echino means "spiny" and derm means "skin."

The echinoderms are complex in many ways. Along with their spiny skin, all of them have a body form that is radially symmetrical. Humans, by contrast, are bilaterally symmetrical (having a left and right half). Besides radial symmetry, echinoderms have a unique water vascular system. Cancer

The very word is scary. Almost all of us know someone who has had the disease. Each year, the number of cases diagnosed has been slowly increasing, making cancer the second most common cause of death (after heart disease) in North America.

So, what do we know about cancer? Cancer cells live in all of us, young and old, rich and poor. We are exposed to various carcinogenic substances from the time we are born until the time we die. What makes the disease "different" by the time it is actually diagnosed? The answer is the immune system. Each person's immune system is unique and not everyone reacts the same to the same environmental, chemical and even genetic influences.

It is really not just one disease, but more than 100, with differing causes and different effects. It can attack any part of the body. The diseases known as cancer share one thing in common: cells that are raging out of control. Some grow quickly while others are more slowly progressing. About one third of the people that are diagnosed with cancer actually die from the disease, while others die from such things as accidents, homicide, suicide, other diseases, and even natural causes.

What causes the cells to behave in such a destructive fashion? We don't always know why the cells change or mutate. Exposure to radiation can cause mutations. Even invisible particles from outer space crashing through our atmosphere and passing through our bodies can be a detriment and source for the disease. Even though it seems to be a relatively new disease we do not entirely know that. People are living longer and therefore the opportunity for it to manifest and affect our lives is now greater than ever before. We do know that about 80% of all cancers are caused by factors already present in the environment. Not all countries have the same cancer rates or even the same types of cancer. Diet, air pollution and exposure to "hormone disruptors" seem to be coming up on the short list continually. It is urgent that we change the safety requirements for the chemical industry and the food industry. We also need to monitor chemicals in the air, water and soil - but most of all we need to be more proactive in the maintenance and health of our own bodies. We need to scrutinize what we put into them and on them. Diet, exercise, lifestyle, stress and attitude are all important. The process of living takes a toll on all of us, so we must try to limit those factors that contribute to giving us - cancer.  This poster measures 25.5" x 36"

Cytoplasm

The cytoplasm is the part of a typical cell located between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Until the 1930s this area was thought of as being simply a fluid filled space containing dissolved chemicals and countless unidentifiable tiny specks. With the development of the electron microscope (e.m.), these specks were determined to be hundreds, and sometimes thousands of definite structures where specific cell functions were being carried out. They are called organelles or "little organs" because of their specific activities.

Chick Embryo

We all know that hens lay eggs and that baby chicks hatch from eggs. Yet, when you open an egg at home, all you see is a yellow yolk and the white surrounding it. There are special processes that occur inside an egg before the chick is hatched. The seemingly shapeless original mass goes through several stages of development before it becomes a chick. To develop into a functioning, living animal it needs to have a backbone, heart, brain and complex organs. The slides on this poster help you to observe the growth of a normal chick embryo. The word "embryo" means the early stages of development of any plant or animal. Most living creatures go through many development stages before they become fully grown.

The embryo starts with one cell and then eventually becomes many. In 21 days a chick made of millions of cells hatches from what began as a single cell. Understanding Sand

Animal Mitosis

This is the story of the first hour of an animal's life, whether it is a man, dog, fish or worm. Each begins life as a single cell. In order to observe animal mitosis under the microscope we have chosen the egg sac of the ascaris, a parasitic worm. Ascarus is a good subject for this study because the chromosomes are large and the number of chromosomes in this species is only four. The female ascaris lays her eggs in small sacs. We can observe some of the eggs as they begin their development, just after fertilization. Although the adult worm is very different from a human, the first hours of both are quite similar and make a good study on the initial stages of animal mitosis. This poster measures 25.5" x 36."

Plant Mitosis

Have you ever propagated a geranium plant by cutting it? You take a small stem on which a few leaves are growing and keep it well watered. When a few tiny foots begin to appear, you plant the stem in soil. After a few weeks, the cutting grows roots, which are just like the roots of the original plant. The new plant has the hereditary traits of the parent plant.

Many plants and shrubs are propagated this way. In each case, the new plants are just like the parent plants because in each cell there is a mechanism that operates to maintain the hereditary pattern from one cell to its daughter cells. The process by which this occurs is known as cell division, or mitosis. The following eight slides were photographed from a single onion root tip showing the phases of plant mitosis in sequence. The terms " equatorial plate" and " poles," as they are used in the study of mitosis, refer to certain locations in the cell. Cell Structure

The human body harbors an incredible range of diversity at not only the physical and creative level but also in the dynamics of the entire cellular system. At adulthood the average human body has almost 10 trillion cells and has over 200 different categories of cells. A few of these types of cells are shown here. We have over 200 bones and thousands upon thousands of fibers which go into making up the various 600 muscles that we depend on not only for movement, but also facial expression and communication. The brain has over 100 billion neurons. The diverse chemistry that our bodies depend on helps to fashion our mood, behavior and health. There are two types of enzyme systems: metabolic and digestive. Additionally the body is composed of glands, hormones, senses, and various immunological responses that all contribute to its well- being and function. Meiosis

You started out in life as a zygote that was formed from two cells. Asperm nucleus and an egg nucleus fused to form the zygote nucleus. Does that mean you have twice as many chromosomes in your cell nuclei as your parents? No! Each member of a species has the same " species number." The species number for humans is 46. Your zygote had only 46 chromosomes, meaning you received 23 chromosomes from each of your parents. How did this happen?

What we learn in mitosis is that when a cell divides, each new cell gets the same number and same kind of chromosome as found in the mother cell. However, sperm·forming or egg.forming cells start with 46 chromosomes, then divide and form gametes with only 23. Obviously, a different kind of division takes place; it is called meiosis. With meiosis in humans, the diploid (2N) number46 is reduced to the monoploid (1 N) number 23.

In this study we use Ascaris, a parasitic worm, to study meiosis because the chromosomes are fairly large and easily seen. Since the diploid (2N) number is 4, counting is simplified. Diploid (2N) implies that there are two similar "sets." While a human has 23 pairs, an Ascaris has 2 pairs of homologous chromosomes. The homologous chromosomes of a pair have similar genes. In diploid organisms (most plants and animals), each member of a pairof homologous chromosomes is inherited from a different parent.

Each slide is a photograph of very thin slices of Ascaris oocytes. The slices you see have been selected to illustrate most clearly the important processes at the different steps. However, most slices will not show all parts that can be found in a whole cell. Let's see how a diploid {2N} oocyte, or egg, with four chromosomes, ends upas an egg with the monoploid (1 N) number two.

The human body harbors an incredible range of diversity at not only the physical and creative level but also the dynamics of the entire cellular system itself. We have over 200 bones and thousands upon thousands of fibers go into making up the various 600 muscles that we depend on not only for movement, but also facial expression and communication. The brain has over 100 billion neurons. The diverse chemistry that our bodies depend on helps to fashion our mood, behavior and health. There are two types of enzyme systems: metabolic and digestive.
